5 Fun Facts About Thailand

This is probably evident already, but just in case it isn’t we will say it again. We are massive fans of our beloved Thailand. The food (this at the very least was probably apparent!), the people, the temples, – we love it all!

But did you know the following about Thailand?

1. Land of the Free

Thailand’s name in the Thai language is Prathet Thai, which means “Land of the Free.” It is the only country in Southeast Asia that was never colonized by a European nation.

2. No Commando

If you like going commando, keep it to yourself in Thailand. It’s technically illegal to leave the house without any underwear on. While it’s likely no one will be checking your drawers, put on a pair. Furthermore, keep your mama proud and wear a clean pair.

3. Good Fortune Cats

In 1996, two rare “diamond-eyed cats,” Phet and Ploy, were married in a fabulous $16,241 Thai wedding, the most expensive pet wedding in the world – only in Thailand!

4. SWING!

Thailand can claim fame to Tiger Woods’ success. He is the son of an American father and a Thai mother. Golf started in Thailand over one-hundred years ago and today many travel to Thailand on ‘golf vacations’.

5. Everything’s Bigger in Bangkok

Bangkok had more visitors than any other city in the world, with over 15 million. London and Paris followed close behind. It is also the largest city in Thailand. One in 10 Thais live in Bangkok.
